Democracy as a political system has been attacked in the year 2023 by totalitarianism, the continuity of the Russian invasion in Ukraine and attempts to destabilize the member countries of the European Union and NATO at a social and political level by sponsoring nationalisms that They only lead to confrontation. The murderous terrorist attack on the State of Israel and the Iranian threat to international maritime traffic in the Red Sea demonstrate that international harmony and the progress fostered by international trade only has democracy as its defender. The United States is the democracy that leads the rest and together with its allies has the ability to defend international maritime routes. The planet faces global challenges that require global solutions, the first being to defeat the totalitarianism that radiates and supports Putin's totalitarian regime through the global media that transmits to the entire world a distorted image of the political and social reality in Europe and America. We must begin to design the peace of tomorrow when the darkness of the era of populism and demagoguery that allows the rebirth of communism and fascism that feed on the social and economic discontent resulting from the pandemic and, before, the economic crisis, dissipates. The enemies of democracy that nest and achieve political representation by channeling the disenchantment of the electrorate will only lead us to a global confrontation where only the victory of democracy or the victory of totalitarianism can be achieved. Prosperity, opportunities for social and economic advancement thanks to study and work, and political and economic stability are only possible in democracy. Populism and the demagoguery of totalitarianism and nationalism only lead to a final conclusion, which is war. It is up to each of the citizens of democracies to ensure that the mistakes of the last century are not repeated. We all fight in Ukraine and in Israel even if we are not aware of it. A false utopian pacifism that permeates society without them being aware that they serve the interests of totalitarianism. We must design a world for the day after, sit the parties at the table and reach agreements, but first we must win this war between democracy and totalitarianism because if there is prosperity and democracy it can be brought to the rest of the planet, otherwise we It will lead to a new Middle Ages of obscurantism, despotism and wars of conquest. The United States must lead this war without isolationist complexes or populism tinged with religious fanaticism and join the rest of the democracies, convincing and showing the risks of thinking that totalitarianism fits into democracy when totalitarianism only seeks dictatorship, whether called fascist or communist. 2024 will be a decisive turning year for the immediate future and it will be necessary to decide between democracy and totalitarianism by those who succumb to populist and demagogic propaganda.
