UKRAINIAN SOLDIER

They were ordinary people

men and women

with dreams of prosperity

interrupted by the invader

they were people

turned into soldiers

Ukrainian soldier

you came home shrouded

or with a limb amputated

without ever ceasing to be a soldier

Ukraine and its soldiers

fight in the trenches

by sea and in the air

and have been stabbed

left to their fate

by who was your ally

Ukraine oozes blood

from fighting at the front

from fighting in the rear

now abandoned

by who was a democracy

Ukrainian soldier

they want your lands

they want to dictate borders

a new ethnic cleansing

and you look to the sky asking

Why are you stabbing me, America?
